and Oldhurst (Modern)
Old Hurst, sometimes referred to as Oldhurst, is a small ring
village located in the centre of the hundred of Hurstingstone
in the District of Huntingdon. Its present day name derives from
Waldhyrst (13th Century) - "Hill with trees, or possibly
clearing in the trees" - but of the great
forest that once surrounded it, the Wold, little remains. As can be seen from
the picture above Old Hurst has some unusual residents at Church
Farm . If you visit the Eccentric Englishman Tea Rooms at the farm
you can see the Ostriches and other exotic creatures.
Old Hurst is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey.
